Working with vegetable-tanned leather, I combine the rigor of traditional leathercraft with organic forms and whimsical designs. Each piece is unique and unrepeatable, handmade in Long Island City, NY.
Veg-tan leather refers to animal leather tanned with extracts from plant materials such as oak bark and spruce bark, as opposed to harsh chemicals such as chromium salt. It is one of the most ancient ways of tanning leather.
I’m intrigued by this material because of its natural tanning process and the complex quality it brings. Due to its breathability, veg-tan leather tends to patina beautifully overtime, developing color changes, gloss, and creases unique to each individual product.
Leather tells the story of an animal through the wrinkles, scars, and variation in density across the hide. I am inspired by the individual characteristics of each piece of leather, and enjoy working with marks and fringes that are typically considered defects in luxury and industrial leather production. I also often use offcuts from past projects to generate one-off products as a way to minimize waste material, embracing the fun of unplanned designs.
